Shelby has always asked more questions than most people have answers for. It turns out that’s exactly what a good brand strategist does.

Shelby grew up just outside Nashville as a curious child who spent her time wandering in the woods, befriending animals, and reading in her favorite tree. In college, that same sense of curiosity split her time between the art building and the psychology department, creativity on one side, human behavior on the other. Branding was where both interests finally made sense together. The way she sees it, you can’t craft messaging that really moves people without understanding what moves them in the first place.

Her career has moved through creative direction, content strategy, and freelance work across construction, healthcare, criminal law, music, and fintech, among others. She loves learning everything there is to know about a new industry, and has built a reputation for getting up to speed fast and going deep once she does.

At FieldWrk, Shelby’s job is distillation. She takes the big, messy, complicated information clients bring to the table and boils it down into verbal identities, core messaging, and campaigns that reflect who they are and resonate with the people they’re trying to reach. She works closely with designers and copywriters to bring it all to life, with genuine curiosity and compassion at every step of the process. Her conviction is that great branding takes empathy. If you can’t see the world through someone else’s eyes, the rest doesn’t matter.

Shelby now lives in East Nashville and spends her free time reading, hiking, crocheting, writing, playing music, and hunting for weird trinkets at the thrift store. She could also talk about animals for an unreasonable amount of time — ask her about the mantis shrimp if you have three business days to spare.

“Great branding takes serious empathy. Whether you're trying to reflect a company's culture or reach its customers, perspective-taking is the most important skill in our line of work.”
